What Are Fungal Infections?

Fungal infections, also known as tinea, can occur on the feet, groin, nails, scalp. They can range in appearance from circular pink scaly plaques, pus bumps, to macerated skin along skin folds. Another variant known as tinea versicolor is characterized by scaly plaques on the trunk, worsened with excess sweating. The diagnosis can be confirmed with fungal culture or biopsy. Treatment includes topical and oral anti-fungal medications.  Fungal infection of the toenails or onychomycosis requires a minimum of three months of oral anti-fungal treatment.
