Kybella®

What is Kybella®?

Kybella® is a non-invasive, non-surgical FDA approved treatment for submental fullness or double chin. It is injected to the area below the chin and permanently destroys fat cells.

How does Kybella® work?

Kybella® is composed of deoxycholic acid, a molecule found in the body that permanently destroys fat cells. When injected to the area below the chin, it lyses fat cells. The destroyed fat cells and deoxycholic acid is cleared by the blood circulation to the liver.

Who is a candidate for Kybella®? Who is not a candidate?

Patients seeking a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment for submental fullness are candidates for treatment.

Patients who are pregnant or have infections in the treatment area are recommended to avoid treatment.

How do you prepare for Kybella®?

Patients are advised to avoid alcohol, advil, alleve, fish oil, and aspirin 48 hours before the procedure to avoid excessive bruising. Men are advised to shave hairs in the treatment area.

What can you expect during Kybella® treatment?

After the area is cleaned, the treatment area is drawn. Kybella® is injected to the treatment area, which is targeted to the fatty layer. After injection, there is some swelling, discomfort, and burning as the deoxycholic acid is destroying fat cells and releasing heat.

What is the recovery and aftercare involved with Kybella®?

Patients are advised not to ice the treatment area, as icing may halt the deoxycholic acid from destroying the fat. Swelling and bruising will last up to two weeks after the treatment. Patients can use healing ointment to massage the treatment area.

What are the side effects of Kybella®?

Side effects of Kybella® include swelling, bruising, burning sensation, and discomfort. Men may experience temporary hair loss in the treatment area, which takes a few months to recover.

Treatment of submental fat may reveal prominence of neck or platysmal bands in older patients. This may require Botox® or neuromodulator injections to help decrease the appearance of these bands.
Rare side effects include difficulty swallowing and weakness of facial muscles, which can manifest as an asymmetric smile. These side effects are temporary.

When will I notice results from Kybella®? How many treatments are needed?

At least two to four treatments, spaced out every six to eight weeks are needed. Results are visible six weeks after the second session.
