Customized Facials

What are customized facials?
Customized facials are tailored treatments to help address specific skin concerns.  They are a great treatment option for patients with acne.  The esthetician can safely extract contents in clogged pores (also known as comedones, blackheads, sebaceous filaments, and whiteheads) and avoid infection and scarring.  The extractions help reduce inflammation associated with acne.

While most facials are performed to treat acne, they can also help decrease redness and improve skin hydration.  Customized facials can be performed during any time of the year, even when patients are planning to be in the sun.
Who performs customized facials at New Bloom Dermatology?
Our licensed esthetician, Michelle Thurston, performs the facials and can treat all skin types.
Who is a candidate for a customized facial?
Patients of all skin types and ages can receive a customized facial, including patients who are pregnant and breastfeeding.
How do you prepare for a customized facial?
Patients who are using topical retinoids, such as tretinoin (Retin A®), tazarotene (Tazorac®), and adapalene (Differin®), and any over-the-counter retinol five days before the procedure to avoid any irritation.  For optimal results, patients are advised to hydrate three days before the facial.  At the session, patients are recommended to communicate any allergies or skin concerns during the consultation.
What can you expect during a customized facial treatment?
After a skin assessment, the esthetician will provide a deep cleansing and exfoliation with steam to prepare the skin for any necessary extractions or milia removal. If needed, high frequency will be used to reduce redness and inflammation. A relaxing lymphatic drainage massage is performed on the face, neck, and décolleté to improve the skin’s circulation and lymphatic drainage. Customized masks and serums are used tailored to specific skin needs. Moisturizer and sunscreen are applied at the end of every treatment.
Are there additional services that can be added during the facial treatment?
Microdermabrasion from Equipro Diamonderm can be added to gently resurface the skin and improve the skin’s texture.  New Bloom Dermatology also has SmartLux Mini, an FDA approved phototherapy device that is more powerful and effective than home-based LED facemasks.  Blue or red light can be added to help reduce redness, inflammation, and bacteria.  Infrared light can be used to reduce pore size.  Red light can also be used to stimulate collagen production, facial skin hydration, and tightness.  These services can be added to the customized facial for an additional fee.
What are the side effects of customized facials?
Side effects of a customized facial include redness, swelling, and irritation, which subsides within 48 hours.  Patients can use aloe to calm down these reactions.
What are the aftercare instructions for customized facials?
Patients are advised to avoid using heavy makeup for at least six hours after the treatment and direct heat from sunlight, sauna, and workouts for at least 24 hours.  If they experience redness, swelling, and irritation, patients are recommended to use aloe.  Furthermore, patients can restart topical retinoids, salicylic and glycolic acid, and benzoyl peroxide a few days after the facial.

When will I notice results from customized facials?  How often are treatments recommended?
Patients notice immediate clearance of clogged pores, brightening of skin, and increased skin hydration.  Customized facials are recommended every six to eight weeks and can be performed more often in patients undergoing acne treatments.

Are there related procedures to customized facials?
Customized facials can be performed two weeks after a chemical peel to enhance the results.  The chemical peels bring the blackheads or comedones to the surface and consequently, the facialist can easily extract these blackheads.
